  • Despite being surrounded by yoga from a young age, it took her many years to connect with the practice on a deeper level. Like many, she began practicing regularly when life outside became challenging. Sweating it out at hot yoga became the best kind of medicine.

She finished her initial teacher training in 2017 and has since taught classes in Edinburgh, London, Sri Lanka and Glasgow. In her flow classes, she incorporates an element of self exploration encouraging students to find freedom through movement.

Her time in Sri Lanka taught her to reflect and slow down, she fell in love with yin, restorative yoga and meditation whilst there. Her nature is to jump from one distraction to the next and she is learning to practice stillness. She aims to hold space for those who might need the same through classes, womxn’s workshops, cacao ceremonies and retreats.

Her invitation is for you to meet yourself exactly where you are, just as you are.

  • As a British born yoga teacher of Indian heritage, descendant of the Sansi tribe, I honour the wisdom traditions of yoga - bringing cultural awareness to the practice and developing understanding of the colonial legacy and racial inequity in modern yoga

I work tirelessly as a sacred activist, antiracist teacher and committed educator towards crystallising the intersectionality of race, culture and power dynamics through the yoga lens

From a heart centred place of revolutionary love, I critically challenge and support yoga students, teachers and studios.

  • It took a long time for Laura to join a yoga class but once Rosina Bonsu introduced her to the Ashtanga Primary Series, she never looked back. With just one session she was hooked! A few years later, in 2015, she met Kia Naddermier and began to practice pranayama daily. The combination of physical posture work and the breath changed her life, decreasing stress, improving her sleep quality and her stamina. Apart from learning from Rosina (her teacher until February 2020) and Kia, Laura also studies with RoseAnn Maclean, and Sudhir Tiwari. She has over 15 years of experience as a mover, as she is a performance artist and an Athenaeum Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She has been an art teacher for many years, including at The Glasgow School of Art and Transart Institute. These experiences have made her sensitive to the inner workings of the body, whether anatomical, energetic or emotional.

Laura completed her Classical Yoga School teacher training in 2017. She has studied yin yoga with Gem Maryam and adjustments with David Swenson. She is a qualified pranayama teacher in the Kaivalyadham lineage. She learns Indian scriptures and philosophy with James Boag and Sanskrit and Vedic chanting with Lucy Crisfield. Her classes work on a complete yoga, one that encompasses body, mind and breath, nourishing them all and awakening our spiritual sense. Although she teaches a variety of forms, her passions are a combination of assisted yoga practice (Mysore style, where teacher and student form an individual relation and the teachings are guided by the practitioner) and pranayama. They both have in common a feeling of delight, a body that invites the breath, a centred mind and gratitude for the practice itself.

  • After coming into contact with her first yoga experience, Lorraine felt like her world had changed for the better. It was the beginning of a new journey, learning to respect the spiritual aspect of her well-being as well as the physical. Lorraine started to practice yoga 2-3 times a week noticing how it calmed her mind, gave focus and made her appreciate the smaller things, while strengthening her body and improving flexibility.

Whilst travelling the world, a chance encounter with a fellow backpacker led Lorraine to 200 hour teacher training in Rishikesh, India in January 2015. Lorraine's time in India and the 200 hour YTT changed her in ways she could never have imagined. Lorraine describes the benefits of a daily asana and meditation practice as incredible, improving both her physical and mental wellbeing. This new outlook on life also gave her the confidence to leave a long career in corporate finance.

Lorraine has continued to further her studies in yoga and in April 2017 completed 50 Hours Yin Yoga teacher training with Sarah Lo, who has been endorsed by Sarah Powers. In May 2019 Lorraine went back to India to complete her 300 hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training in Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga styles. The training focused on Elemental yoga according to the 5 Elements in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Lorraine teaches many styles of yoga therefore her classes are accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability or background. Her Vinyasa classes are woven with theme and intention, to inspire and transform. They are creative and intelligently sequenced, blending together mindful movement that is strengthening, dynamic, and fun. Yin Classes place a strong focus on meridian theory and mindfulness. As Lorraine is also a trained massage therapist, massage balls are often used in class to further aid myofascial release and stimulate acupressure points. Lorraine believes in a functional approach to yoga, therefore although alignment direction is provided in all classes; she encourages students to listen to their bodies and do what they feel is appropriate and safe.

  • Julia Clarke is a yoga teacher, Ayurvedic practitioner and writer who lives in her hometown of Glasgow. She has been teaching yoga since 2008 and is the author of two books: Restorative Yoga for Beginners and Living in Balance with Maharishi Ayurveda.

Julia primarily teaches Vinyasa, Restorative and Yin Yoga styles. She lived in the US for nearly 20 years and during that time she owned a yoga studio in the Rocky Mountains, made wine in Missouri, worked as a radio presenter in Vermont and Boston and a music promoter in New York City.

She has trained with many great yoga teachers and earned 200 hours in Hatha Yoga at Integral Yoga Institute in New York, 300 hours in Prana Flow with Shiva Rea, Restorative Yoga with Shannon Paige and Yin Yoga with Corina Benner.

When she's not teaching yoga, Julia is an outdoors journalist which sees her spending her days exploring the mountains on foot, bike and belay, then writing about it. Back on the mat, she's a champion for using yoga and Ayurveda as a means to recharge and enjoy life to the fullest, and believes strongly in sustainability in yoga as well as in life.

  • Laura lives with her son Sam, daughter Penny and husband Steven. She is a yoga teacher and owns Studio 70. She was brought up on a small holding in the North East of Scotland so is an animal lover and she has a bulldog named Mogwai.

Laura has been teaching Vinyasa Flow and Restorative Yoga in Glasgow since 2015.   Laura was inspired to open the studio by the amazing yoga community in Vancouver where she lived for 2 years.

She has studied with Brigitte Longueville, David McAmmond, Natalie Rousseau, Jules Mitchell, Michael Stone and many more inspiring teachers. Laura graduated from a 200 hours Teacher Training in 2015.

She teaches classes with a focus on embodied movement and awareness of breath and sensation. She encourages people to approach their practise with lots of compassion, self love and humour.  She wants people to feel amazing in their bodies and to learn to connect with parts of their body that feel stuck or shut down.

I'm committed to deconstructing barriers in my teaching, striving to be as accessible as possible to folks who might feel alienated or excluded from yoga spaces. And to decolonise my teaching and practice so I can properly honour and pay tribute to the South Asian heritage and history of this incredible practice. I am continuing to train and study with many wonderful teachers who are provoking, inspiring and hold me accountable to these goals.

FAQs

  • Though you do not have to aspire to teach, you must be willing to participate in all practical exercises.

  • Yes, your final assessment will include both a practical teaching exam and a written exam. These assessments are not designed to test your abilities so much as provide a safe, constructive space for you to put the tools you’ve learned into practice, and help you identify your own strengths and areas for improvement.

Additionally, you will be required to complete six class observations before receiving your certification.

  • Upon completion of this program, you will be 200 hour certified with Studio 70 and if you wish, you will be able to register your certification with Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance registration is entirely voluntary.

  • Though the schedule will vary a little according to the content and teachers, in general we will begin each day with lecture, followed by a short break then a physical practice. We will take a longer break for lunch before afternoon lecture, a short break and an evening practice that will typically be more lunar or gentle in quality.

  • Studio 70 has free parking in the surrounding area and a dedicated space for training, bathrooms and a small kitchen where you can make hot drinks. It is recommended that you bring any snacks you require to fuel you throughout the day and you’ll be welcome to bring a packed lunch or explore the nearby cafes on Victoria Road.

  • You do not need to be able to execute advanced postures to do this training, but a regular practice and an understanding of the more common poses is important. If you’re interested in developing your physical practice, you’ll receive the tools to do so, but what’s more important is that you arrived with curiosity and a willingness to learn and grow.

  • In order to receive certification for this training, you must attend all sessions. If you experience an emergency and miss a session, a makeup session with the teacher can be arranged at the additional cost of £100 per hour.

  • The best thing to do is contact us so we can discuss your concerns. We can help you to modify the physical practices to accommodate your needs and it’s more important that you’re able to attend all sessions, complete your assignments and participate in group work than it is to be able to complete the practices.

  • Between your acceptance and the beginning of the program, the best thing you can do is take good care of yourself. Get plenty of rest, ask those in your life to support you and stay engaged in a regular practice.

Testimonials

What I learned and how much I grew under the tutelage of Julia Clarke is immeasurable. She opened my eyes, mind and heart to yoga not just as a gift from me as a teacher to others but also to myself. As one of her students, you will learn how to strive for the extraordinary. This is only the beginning.
— Nicole M
I have had the privilege of learning so much from her on and off of the mat. She is a gifted teacher, meticulous and dedicated to the goal of producing great teachers and this training prepares you to do just that. Julia is dedicated to staying true to the essence of yoga and she loves empowering others to do the same. Words just don’t seem to do her justice!
— Georgina B
What a joy it was to spend the summer with Julia learning all about yoga. My intentions were never to teach yoga, but at the end of the training I realized I had to share what I had learned from this extraordinary teacher. This teacher training is excellent, and I guarantee you will find your voice and accomplish what you once thought impossible
